Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Leicester City right-back Ricardo Pereira as well as a number of other full-backs in the January transfer window, per The Daily Mail.
What’s the word?
Spurs lost 1-0 to Southampton on New Year’s Day and are currently sixth in the Premier League, with the winter window now open.
The Mail reports that the club have £60m to spend at the turn of the year and, though they are likely to wait until the summer to splash the cash, they are said to be monitoring a number of full-backs, which is deemed an area of weakness.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
Pereira is said to be a target, while Jonjoe Kenny, contracted to Everton but currently on loan at Schalke, West Brom’s Nathan Ferguson and Lille’s Mehmet Zeki Celik are also listed as potential acquisitions.
Immediacy needed
Spurs need to do this quickly.
Serge Aurier is seemingly the only senior right-back that Jose Mourinho trusts in north London, with Kyle Walker-Peters yet to play in the league under the Portuguese.
The Ivory Coast international is prone to the odd lapse in judgement, however, and was widely panned by fans for his performance against Norwich City, while he was also sent off against Southampton earlier this season and conceded a decisive penalty against Liverpool.
Thus, bringing in reinforcements on the right-hand side of defence at the turn of the year has to be a priority.
One has to wonder, indeed, what would happen if Aurier were to pick up an injury, with Mourinho clearly sceptical of the attributes offered by Walker-Peters.
Even for depth purposes, this is a necessary move. Whoever is signed, though, Spurs need to get a move on.
Meanwhile, Spurs fans want one man gone in January.
