Given the circumstances around his departure, you’d struggle to find a West Ham United fan who didn’t want to see the back of Dimitri Payet by the time he left for Marseilles. What was always clear though is that on the pitch, the Irons needed someone to step up in his place and be the creative and goalscoring force required to progress in the Premier League. As these figures from Squawka show, that man may prove to be Argentinian midfielder Manuel Lanzini.
The attacking midfielder is in exceptional form and contributed massively to Saturday’s 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion.ÂLanzini was arguably the Hammers’ star man, scoring the second goal that looked like would give Slaven Bilic’s side a massive three points.
In truth, the Hammers should have won the game and were only denied the victory by a late, late Gareth Macauley effort.
It takes nothing away from Lanzini’s performance though and if he can keep up the standard he has set over the last five games then things are looking up for West Ham United.
