Liverpool’s former managing director Christian Purslow has issued a warning to the Merseyside club.
The businessman believes that manager Jurgen Klopp could eventually walk away from Anfield if his expectations with regards to transfer spending are not met.
Fees for players have risen astronomically in the modern game. For example, just recently, the Reds sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for a reported £142m figure.
Liverpool do not possess the same financial clout as Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea, which some may argue is why the Merseyside outfit are yet to transform into title contenders.
Both Manchester clubs spent in excess of £100m in the summer on new recruits.
This month, Liverpool have already splashed £75m on Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, and now Purslow, who worked at Anfield from 2009 to 2010, thinks that the club need to start targeting elite talent or risk getting left behind.
In an interview with Sky Sports, the Reds’ former managing director said:
“[United] are shopping at Harrods – I do not know why he is making excuses by the way – Liverpool need to start shopping at Harrods rather than just selling the good ones. And I really believe Jurgen Klopp is absolutely A-list, he is the next manager for one of those bigger clubs if Liverpool do not fulfil his ambitions.”
