With the January transfer window now well and truly open, one of the big talking points at the Stadium of Light no doubt revolves around Aiden McGeady’s future. Earlier in December, Phil Parkinson made it abundantly clear that a chat with the winger saw them reach a conclusion that him leaving in search of pastures new would be best for everyone involved.
Reports in recent weeks have suggested a few Championship sides are keen to offer McGeady an escape route out of Sunderland, and it now remains a matter of when, and not if, the Republic of Ireland ace packs his bags. And whilst he may have fallen out of favour with Parkinson, there can be no denying what McGeady has brought to the table in his time in the north east of England. He was the club’s player of the year last season, and has also scored six times this campaign too. Replacing someone of that influence is not going to be easy.
But when one door closes, another door opens. And in a performance brimming with potential and excitement against Lincoln City, Lynden Gooch laid down a marker that he could perhaps be the man to take over the throne in the long-term. The American was in scintillating form for Parkinson’s side, and in a blistering first-half performance from the Black Cats, scored twice to help them to a 3-0 lead by the break.
And aside from his two goals, Gooch also looked to make things happen with the ball, providing one accurate cross, completing both of his two attempted long balls and earning a free-kick too. At only 24-years-old, the winger also has plenty of time on his hands, and he can further develop and improve with the club.
He has already shown Sunderland how vital he can be for them by playing an almost even number of games on either flank, and that versatility will be of major appeal to Parkinson.
As the side try and chase down a path to promotion, Gooch can be the man to fill the massive shoes of McGeady. And after his performance against Lincoln on Saturday afternoon, that prospect doesn’t seem too far-fetched.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are planning a loan move for this ace from the Championship.
